NEW JERSEY SCHOOLS DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY CELEBRATES PROGRESS OF DENBO CRICHTON SCHOOL CONSTRUCTION IN PEMBERTON

July 11, 2019 – Trenton, NJ – On Wednesday, July 10th, the New Jersey Schools Development Authority (SDA) along with students, school officials and local officials celebrated the construction progress of the new Denbo Crichton Elementary School in Pemberton with a brick signing.

When the school is open to students in September 2020, it will be a 126,000 square-foot facility that will accommodate approximately 850 students from Pre-K through 5th grade. The school will have 47 classrooms (including self-contained special education) and feature a multi-purpose room with a stage, a gymnasium, a science demonstration room, an art room, a technology lab, a vocal music room, and a computer lab.

The new school is located at One Learning Way, Browns Mills, NJ.

“The Schools Development Authority has invested more than $45 million on 20 different projects in the Pemberton School District, and this new school represents the largest school project we’ve built in Pemberton to date,” said Manuel Da Silva, SDA Interim Chief Executive Officer. “This new facility will give students the opportunity to learn in a state-of-the-art educational environment that will provide them with a thorough and efficient education.”

The estimated cost of the new Denbo-Crichton school is approximately $59 million.

Built in 1965, the Denbo School accommodated 359 students from 3rd through 5th grade. The Crichton School, built in 1969, accommodated 349 students, from Pre-K to 2nd grade. The SDA determined that replacing both schools with one new facility was the most effective and efficient option to address the overcrowding issues and to deliver spaces that align with New Jersey Department of Education standards. The District is using the Isaiah Haines Elementary School facility as a temporary space for the students who had been in the Crichton building. The Denbo School continues to accommodate students during construction. This school will be deconstructed in 2021 after the new Denbo-Crichton School is occupied.

The SDA has invested approximately $45 million in completed projects in Pemberton alone since the inception of the school construction program. Its current portfolio of active projects is valued at approximately $2 billion – including the Capital Project portfolio, emergent projects, and Regular Operating District grants.

Ernest Bock & Sons, Inc. is managing the project’s design-build services. As part of the design-build contract, Ernest Bock & Sons is partnering with SSP Architectural Group on the design. Cambridge Construction, Inc. is providing construction management services for the project.
