NEW JERSEY SCHOOLS DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY BREAKS GROUND
ON MILLVILLE HIGH SCHOOL –ADDITION ON WEST SIDE OF BUILDING
FEBRUARY 7, 2019 – MILLVILLE, NJ – Today, the New Jersey Schools Development Authority (SDA), joined by students, legislative representatives and school officials, hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for the start of construction of the addition to the west side of the Millville High School.
"For too long, New Jersey schools have been in a state of disrepair," said Lizette Delgado Polanco, CEO of the SDA. "At the SDA, we believe an effective state-of-the-art school facility is an investment in our communities and a response to the changing educational needs of our children. If we want kids to succeed, then we must provide them with the necessary infrastructure to do so."
The $137.5 million Millville High School addition/renovation project will consist of approximately 230,000 square-feet of additions and more than 55,000 square-feet of renovations that will increase student capacity to accommodate more than 2,000 students in grades nine through 12. Today’s event marks the start of construction for the addition on the West side of the Millville High School, the first of three additions to the building. This approximately 82,000 square-foot addition will provide 32 classrooms, a cafeteria, faculty dining room, kitchen, two culinary art labs, eight small group instruction rooms, two self-contained special education classrooms and one life skills classroom.
"I am very excited about working with the New Jersey Schools Development Authority on our high school renovation project," said Superintendent Dr. David Gentile. "On behalf of the Millville Public School District, I am grateful for the funding to provide our students with a modern-comprehensive facility to learn, problem solve and pursue their futures in."
An active capital project, and one of the most involved the SDA has undertaken, the project has been divided into four phases, thus, allowing for the Millville School District to continue to utilize the existing facility. Throughout the project, existing and temporary facilities will be utilized as swing space by students and staff.
The Millville High School addition/renovation project will be completed in four phases.
• Phase I, which is complete, included the demolition of the Auditorium and select classrooms and the construction of a temporary cafeteria, music rooms and walkways.
• Phase II, currently in progress, involves the demolition of the cafeteria, transforming the existing auditorium into a new media center and transforming the existing band and vocal rooms into the new main office. It also includes the construction of a new three-story addition on the west side of the building.
• Phase III includes the demolition of temporary classroom units, temporary cafeteria, various interior renovations and construction of a new two-story addition on the north side of the building, which will house the new gymnasium, locker rooms, weight room, classrooms and science laboratories.
• Phase IV includes the demolition of the rotunda and green house, various alterations, construction of the new auditorium and art studios on the South side of the building.
This will be the third capital project completed by the SDA in Millville. Since the program’s inception, the SDA has invested more than $55 million in completed projects in Millville alone. This includes two Capital Projects: the Lakeside Middle School and Millville Early Childhood Center as well as 13 Health and Safety/Grants/Emergent Projects.
Hall Construction Co., Inc. of Howell was awarded the design-build contract for this project in the amount of $114,453,000. As part of the design-build contract, Hall Construction Co., Inc. is partnering with Paulus, Sokolowski & Sartor Engineering of Warren on the design.
