Barnegat High School

This new high school with an added new wing can accommodate approximately 1,500 students from Barnegat who formerly attended the Southern Regional High School in Manahawkin. Thomas Associates designed the facility.

Phase I
Thomas Associates’ design called for a 156,000 square-foot, 2-story building built on a 66-acre site that was previously acquired by the Barnegat Township Board of Education. The school is a state-of-the-art facility, with approximately 29 classrooms, six science labs, two technology labs and art and music rooms. There is a cafeteria with full kitchen, a media center, a gymnasium with locker rooms, and a 600-seat auditorium. Six athletic fields and a track are on the site as well.

Students were phased in over a four-year period. An additional class was added each year to Barnegat High School, so the 2004 freshmen represented the high school’s first graduating class of 2008.

The Patock Construction Company was the general contractor and Gilbane Building Company the project management firm for the project.

The school opened September 2004 and on November 13, 2004 the new Barnegat High School was formally dedicated. The ribbon-cutting included school district and local officials, students, teachers, community supporters, New Jersey Schools Construction Corporation (SCC) representatives and others who helped make the school a reality.

Phase II
Thomas Associates designed additions to the high school. This encompasses 50,000 square feet of space, and includes 28 new classrooms and an alternate gymnasium. Both additions match the existing concrete masonry facade. Alterations include connection points to the existing school and renovations and additions to the existing parking lots, and the complete construction of the practice fields adjacent to the main parking lot, additional security cameras on the second floor of the existing wing, construction of a roadway guard rail, construction of fencing along paced access road leading up to the track and field.

Hall Building Corporation was awarded the general construction contract on October 16, 2006 for the addition project. Armand Corporation provided Construction Management services. Phase II opened for students September 2008.
