NOTE: The SDA, in cooperation with the Department of Education, conducted a review of all projects previously in the 2008 Capital Plan that were not yet in construction. These projects were closely evaluated using criteria such as educational need, cost efficiency and potential for design standardization. The 2011 Capital Program was reviewed and approved by the SDA Board of Directors on March 2, 2011. The SDA will continue to have ongoing conversations with the districts so that their projects may be able to advance in subsequent years. A construction project has been approved as part of the 2008 Capital Plan for SDA Districts. Based on the options analyzed in a Feasibility Study it has been concluded that the most cost-effective scope of work to meet the programmatic needs of the District includes demolition of existing industrial structures and construction of a new school facility on the acquired Roebling site. However, SDA management is reviewing strategies for identification and pursuit of any potential private development interest in some of the existing structures on site prior to demolition. No additional land acquisition is anticipated for this project. The school will educate 1,183 students and will include 59 classrooms for Kindergarten through 8th grade. The program for the school includes science labs and other specialized instructional areas, cafetorium, gymnasium, media center and required administrative spaces. In recognition of the historic nature of the site, the project scope includes the creation of an interactive exhibit within the new school which would recall the industrial legacy of the Roebling wire rope factory and its contributions, preserving the memory and historic impact on science and technology. |
