Central High School

New Construction
The new 260,000-square-foot Central High School is constructed on a parcel of land bounded by 17th Avenue, Boyd Street and 18th Avenue, located next to the planned Nat Turner Park. The site area is 7.3 acres. Most of the property needed for the new school (including the land on which the school is situated) was previously owned by the City of Newark. This land has been acquired by the Schools Construction Corporation (predecessor to the Schools Development Authority).

The new school is relocated to the community it serves. It has a 1200-student capacity in grades 9 to 12. Design for the school included a three-story academic wing (providing separate floors for each of the school’s three academies) and a shared school/community wing containing an auditorium, gymnasium and media center. An atrium lobby connects the two wings. The school also contains a full clinic and a childcare center, parking and recreational space.

Environmental design features include geothermal application for heating and cooling, energy recovery for all continuously occupied spaces and day lighting for virtually all instructional spaces.

Johnson Jones Architects and Gruzen Samton LLP were retained by the SCC to provide full design services for the school. Hunt Construction Group, Inc. was the general contractor; PB+3D/I was the project management firm for this project. School opened for students September 2008.
