Langston Hughes Elementary School

Status: Completed
The original Langston Hughes Elementary School was constructed in 1925. A 92,146-square-foot replacement school for 515 pre-Kindergarten through 5th grade students replaces the existing Langston Hughes School on an adjacent site. The new school was completed in August 2006; the old school will now serve as swing space.

In addition to the 30 general classrooms, the school houses additional specific academic spaces: music room with an attached practice room, science demonstration lab, foreign language classroom, art classroom, publishing lab, a writing classroom, computer technology classroom and a graphic arts room.

The elementary school is designed to maximize energy efficiency and environmental sustainability under LEED guidelines, and telecommunications connectivity through the E-Rate Program. It is a community school, with gym, cafeteria, library, auditorium and computer lab on the first floor for access by local residents and community at large. The public access areas can be secured from the rest of the school building when necessary, and there are interior and exterior security cameras.

The architect for the school is NJ K-12, LLC. The construction contract was awarded to VRH Construction in December 2004. Don Todd Associates was the project management firm that oversaw the construction project for the New Jersey Schools Construction Corporation. Langston Hughes opened on September 7, 2006.
