Monsignor João S. Antão School No. 31

This project consisted of all work required for the construction of the new Elizabeth Public School No. 31 to house grades Pre-Kindergarten through grade 8, as well as demolition and renovation of buildings adjacent to it on site. The total square footage is approximately 123,000 square feet. The school capacity is approximately 750 students.

The new three-story school is located at 1014 South Elmora Avenue. The facilities accommodate educational programs and support services for all students. The architecture of the building responds appropriately to its site with the assembly spaces such as a cafetorium with stage, and gymnasium aligned along the existing train tracks, with the major classroom spaces isolated from the difficulties of the site by a full-length light well and the major assembly spaces. The 60 classrooms, including small group instruction spaces, overlook a protected play area. Site improvements included rubberized play surfaces, vehicular access to the site and parking, new sidewalks and landscaping, as well as site lighting and a complementary mix of precast concrete, brick masonry and a glass curtain wall.

The project provides appropriate space for instructional areas, athletic facilities, support programs, technology updates, parking and community activities. The environment of the school provides a friendly, inviting and secure building and is designed to accommodate the needs of students as they relate to the District’s Educational Program.

The school will initially serve as "swing space" for students who attended Victor Mravlag School No. 21, William Halloran School No. 22, and Terence C. Reilly Middle School. School No. 31 will offer students an extended day, after-school and after-care programs.

Hillier Architecture is the Architect of Record; Prismatic Development the General Contractor, with Bovis Lend Lease working as the Project Management Firm. The school opened September 6, 2006.
