This project consisted of all work required for the construction of the new Public School No. 27 housing grades pre-Kindergarten through grade 8, as well as demolition of the structures currently on the proposed site. The total square footage is 118,600 square feet on an urban 2.4-acre site. The school capacity is approximately 750 students. The project is a three-story structure providing appropriate space for instructional areas, athletic facilities, support programs, technology upgrades, parking and community activities. The environment of the school provides a friendly, inviting, but secure building and is designed to accommodate the needs of students as they relate to the District's Educational Program, as well as, community members as they use recreational and assembly areas. Subgrade parking for 96 staff and visitors are located under the building. The three-story building above houses the educational spaces with the first floor being at grade for street-level access. The first floor houses the Pre-Kindergarten through Kindergarten program and is served by a separate Pre-K through Kindergarten auxiliary gymnasium and play area. Due to the site's limitations, this play area will be located on the upper deck of the parking garage. Grades 1 through 5 are housed on the second floor, and grades 6-8 are located on the third floor. Separate play areas are provided onsite at grade level for the students in grades 1-5 and 6-8. Public assembly spaces are located on the first floor, which will be used by both the community and the school program. Accessed from a secured lobby entrance (adjacent to the administration area) are a full-size gymnasium, with a seating capacity of 322, and a cafetorium with a full fly stage. These can be isolated from the rest of the school after hours. The media center is located on the second floor, which is centrally located among the three classroom levels. The technology lab, music/choral and instrumental music classrooms, art rooms and the piano and science labs are on the third floor. Gilbert Architects, Inc. of Hamilton, NJ was the Architect of Record for this project. Bovis Lend Lease was the Project Management Firm. Prismatic Development Corporation was awarded the general construction contract September 25, 2006. School opened for students September 2008. |
