International High School Academy

International High School is located on Grand Street running west from Perry Street on a site formerly occupied by the Dean McNulty Housing Project. Program goals include the provision of multi-functional environments which encourage students to act with self direction towards peaceful intellectual, social and academic advancement through cooperation and the exchange of ideas, drawing on the rich cultural diversity found in Paterson’s population. The UN model informs curricula based on the institution’s goals of equality, peaceful settlement of differences, global awareness, dedication to advanced inquiry into health, technology and the protection of the environment, and respect for and celebration of diversity.

This 113,000-square-foot 4-story facility houses 528 high school students. The facility is comprised of 15 general classrooms, 1 CAD room, 4 science labs, 4 science prep rooms, 2 art rooms, a choral music room, a instrumental music room, technology lab, gymnasium, auxiliary gymnasium, auditorium including stage, cafeteria and cafeteria kitchen, media center, small group instruction room, home economics room, ITV room, language labs and administrative spaces.

Special features include an international flag plaza and auditorium on Grand Street for maximum visual identity and presence as a new facility. A 2-story media center and a central communicating area invite community access and shared utilization. The main classroom and administration blocks are designed around a central open atrium space.

Construction details for the high school include steel frame structure supported by piled foundation. Interior finishes proposed include both block walls and drywall with impact resistant sheet rock in classroom areas. The exterior is brick and block with glass walls in the media center and central stairway.

The project was designed by L+C and constructed by Terminal Construction Corporation. Jacobs was the Program Management Firm for the project.

School opened for students September 2008.
