Following World War I the area of Paterson north of Broadway experienced a great surge in population causing overcrowding at old No. 1, No. 10 and No. 6 schools. Therefore, in 1920 work began on a new School No. 6, because additions to the old building were no longer practical. The city acquired the mansions of the Katz and Norwood families at 121 and 131 Carroll Street. This land was leveled and construction commenced on the new building. The school was built in 1921. The new School No. 6 was considered an innovative school facility containing a modern gymnasium and many other new educational departments. The 88, 487-square-foot 36-classroom facility houses 779 kindergarten through 8th grade students. Health and Safety work has been performed at the school. The work included a complete new heating and ventilating system throughout the building including boilers and heat distribution piping, installation of emergency and exit lighting system, improvements the stair tower assembly and doors, replacement of classroom doors, roof, windows, auditorium seating and interior railings and masonry repairs. |
