The addition to Thurgood Marshall Elementary is a 3-story 13,278-square-foot building with a new entrance. There are 50 classrooms for the 814 students. The first floor of the new building houses a new gymnasium, which will be equipped with an office and locker rooms. The facility also includes a stage area, a music room, a resource center, conference rooms and new kitchen/cafeteria. The existing 75,000-square-foot building received a total renovation. It included the conversion of 2 classrooms on the fourth floor into a new discovery/technology lab. The building's mechanical and electrical systems were overhauled to allow for the installation of new air conditioners, plumbing, heaters, fire alarm systems, handicap accessibility, and sprinkler systems. Under the supervision of Gilbane Building Company, Gilbert Architects designed the project. The contractor was Brockwell and Carrington Contractor, Inc. This project was awarded as a small business enterprise (SBE). Construction notice to proceed was January of 2005. Completion date for full service of the facility was fall, 2006. |
