Martin Luther King/Jefferson School

The new Martin Luther King/Thomas Jefferson Elementary School is a 118,884-square-foot, two-story building accommodating a student enrollment of 727 students in pre-Kindergarten through 8th grades. The school consists of 40 classrooms organized into three distinct classroom wings: one wing each for pre-K through second grade, grades three through five, and grades six through eight. The school incorporates a visual and performing arts program, and a science and technology program. The central administration area has office space for the principal and vice principal and administrative staff. The school has a cafeteria, an art room, a music room, two science labs, two computer labs a TV studio, gymnasium and a media center. The project includes athletic fields, a play area and administrative parking.

The new school houses students from the antiquated Martin Luther King, Jr. and Thomas Jefferson elementary schools in one building constructed near the existing Jefferson School. MLK (originally Junior School No. 1) opened in 1916; Jefferson School opened in 1904 and received an addition in 1950.

The new school was designed by Johnson Jones Architects Planners, Inc. Hill International, Inc. managed the project for the SDA. The general contractor, Hall Construction Co Inc., completed the project after replacing Turner Construction Co.

A dedication ceremony for the new school was held March 3, 2010.
