Joyce Kilmer Elementary School

Health and Safety work has been performed at the orginal Kilmer School to bring the school up to code. This project involved a new roof, designed by Garrison Architects and constructed by United States Roofing Corporation. Structural Concepts, Incorporated performed additional repairs to the facility consisting of repairs to the masonry, replacement of some windows, repair and replacement of the existing doors, the installation of new hardware, repainting in some areas, new corridor and common area lighting, and new exit signs and emergency lights. This project was completed in 2003.

The original Joyce Kilmer Elementary School building has since been replaced by an entirely new three-story facility. The new facility was constructed on an open athletic field next to the original school that served as swing space until the new school was completed. Faridy Veisz Fraytak P.C., a local architectural firm whose roots in the area go back to the firm’s founding in 1918, designed the new facility. Faridy Veisz Fraytak’s design called for a three-story, 119,882 square-foot building, with a central courtyard that will provide the building with more light and ventilation, as well as provide the school with a valuable “Living Science Center.”

In addition to administrative offices and classrooms for the school’s pre-K-5th grade students, the new school consists of 3 pre-k classrooms, 4 kindergarten classrooms, 16 1st grade through 4th grade classrooms, six 5th through 6th grade classrooms, five 7th through 8th grade classrooms, 2 science classrooms, 2 self-contained classrooms, 2 computer labs, an art room, vocal/music room, life skills classroom, technology classroom, and science lab.

Epic Management began the construction of the school in January of 2004. Hill International is the Project Management Firm.

Students began attending classes in the new facility in September 2006.
