The new Christopher Columbus Elementary School provides educational opportunities for 260 students in grades Pre-Kindergarten through 8th. The 73,681-square-foot, three-story facility includes large-group and community-related functions such as a cafeteria, media center, gymnasium and administrative offices on the first floor. The second floor accommodates 1st through 4th grade classrooms, special education areas and science and art rooms. The third floor comprises 4th through 8th grade classrooms as well as a science lab, satellite administration area and a small-group instruction room. Columbus School students attended classes in facilities at St. Hedwig's School on Indiana Avenue while the original buildings were razed and the new school was constructed. The orginal Columbus school was built in 1893; an addition was added in 1955. The Turner construction Company broke ground on the new school in February of 2004. The school opened in September 2006.
