and Athletic Complex This demonstration school project proposed by the Union City School District and the City of Union City is a new high school on the site of the old Roosevelt stadium, which has served as a treasured recreational space for the entire school district and the community since 1937. What makes this demonstration project unique among New Jersey schools is the high school's innovative design, which includes a new athletic field, situated on the roof of a two-story, multi-purpose structure adjoining the four-story main school building. Community features accessible to both the students and the residents of the community, including health care and family support services for the student population. School Facilities Project with Community Design Features The new high school facility is 366,500 square feet and accommodates approximately 1,800 students. The two-story structure accommodates the project's shared activity and service spaces, such as the auditorium, gymnasium, cafeteria and service loading areas. The athletic field is constructed no more than 30 feet above the first floor area of this building to accommodate a regulation size football/baseball field. The field is contained within a parapet wall with nets at locations to prevent balls from impeding on street traffic. There is an exterior pedestrian access ramps on the North and South ends of the structure for community sporting events after school hours. In addition to the new athletic field, gymnasium and auditorium, there are also community access for scheduled use of the media center and cafeteria. A 200 car multi-story parking deck located one block away from the school site will satisfy parking requirements for the new school. Local funding provided for bleachers, scoreboard, field lighting and field level locker rooms associated with the athletic venue. The Union City Redevelopment Agency (UCRA) was the redevelopment entity and Summit Redevelopers, LLC was the redeveloper that managed the project. EPIC Management was the Construction Manager/Contractor for the high school and parking structure. Professional design for the high school project was provided by a joint venture of Rivardo, Schnitzer, Capazzi and HOK. The school opened in September 2009. |
