Number 34 Elementary School

The main structure of this school was designed using Neo-Classic style which incorporates brick and limestone in addition to ornate trim constructed of terra cotta. The first portion of the facility, consisting of a ten classroom structure was built circa 1911. In 1913 an eighteen classroom structure was added to the 1911 structure, and a 31,666-square-foot addition was built in 1999. This 108,086-square-foot facility has a student capacity of 711 and houses kindergarten through grade 5 students. The scope of work only pertains to the 1911 and 1913 portions of the structure.

The design objective of this rehabilitation project included the inspection and evaluation of the building façade including brick veneer, terra cotta elements, window/door lintels and structural steel backup, aluminum windows, exterior walkways, and site fencing of existing Public School 34, and required repairs/replacement of the proposed façade and site elements.

The Ives Group was the design firm for this project, Cobra Construction Co., Inc. the general contractor. URS Corporation was the project management firm for the project.

The project was phased for the summers of 2007 and 2008, allowing needed work to be accomplished without student occupancy in the building. The project was completed for a September 2008 opening.
