Newark
First Avenue Elementary School (new)

214 First Avenue

Newark, NJ

First Avenue Elementary School

Overview:
The new school occupies a full block surrounded by the residential neighborhood it services. The school is therefore designated to reflect, and blend with, the surrounding community. The school serves 850 pre-kindergarten to 8th grade students.

Due to the limited space available on the site, parking will be tucked under the building. This will make positive use of the significant change in grade between 6th and 7th Streets. The recreation space has been developed as a courtyard area directly off the gymnasium and cafeteria. There is also dedicated recreation space for the pre-kindergarten classes. The 183,200-square-foot school will include a library, auditorium, computer and science labs, and a cafeteria with a kitchen.

The architectural firm for the project was Paulus,Sokolowski & Sartor Engineering. Hall Construction Company Inc. was the general contractor for the project. The project management firm is PB+3DI.

The school is located on block 1968, bordered by First Avenue, 6th Street, Second Avenue, and 7th Street. Construction began in 2005. A groundbreaking ceremony was held October 14, 2005. The school opened in September 2007.
