New Construction The new 275,000-square-foot Science Park High School (SPHS) is constructed on a site bounded by Norfolk Street, Market Street, South Orange Avenue, and Richmond Street. The site area is 6 acres. The school is configured on two contiguous city blocks. Recreational facilities, such as softball and soccer fields, and faculty/staff parking are on the adjacent block. SPHS has a 1200-student capacity in grades 7 to 12. All aspects of this building have been designed based on the school's mission as Newark's magnet science high school. SPHS has been developed and designed in partnership with University Heights/Science Park and the four Newark institutes of higher learning (Essex County College, N.J.I.T., Rutgers-Newark, and U.M.D.N.J.), collectively known as CHEN. The new high school is located in the designated Science Park development area, in close proximately to the CHEN institutions. This arrangement will facilitate the planned close relationship between the high school and the universities. The school provides state-of-the-art experiment-based learning. Building design includes solar cells and use of geothermal energy sources for heating and cooling. The technology in the school is integrated into the CHEN technology system, with technical support provided by the universities. Along with core content, (English, math science social studies, world languages, electives), the curriculum will focus on state-the art experiment-based learning. Highlights of the facility include: a media/technology center that features an instructional television lab (ITV) a long distance learning system and computer-aided design (CAD) classroom space divided into "academic villages” – educational learning modules for interdisciplinary instruction, and lecture rooms; fabrication room for robotics and other science-related activities; independent science research area; an auditorium, gym and cafeteria; and space for student services. All of Newark's new schools will be designed to also serve as community resources. To that end the facilities most likely to be used by the community (auditorium, gym, natatorium) have been grouped at one end of the building with an inviting lobby entrance so that community can arrange for use of these spaces. Einhorn Yaffee Prescott Architecture & Engineering designed the project that was constructed by Hunt Construction Group, Inc. PB+3D/I is the project management firm for the project. The school was dedicated on November 20, 2006. |
