The original Mount Vernon Elementary School was a 2-story brick-building constructed in 1909/1927 that housed 439 kindergarten through 5th grade students. It is planned that this existing facility will be used as swing space during the District construction program, and eventually demolished with sports fields and playground areas created in its place.
The new Mount Vernon Elementary school has been constructed next to the existing facility on the site that had been used as the school playground. The new 93,821-square-foot elementary school is a multi-level 2 and 3 story facility with 31 classrooms that serves a population of over 450 kindergarten through 5th grade students. The school includes a media center, gymnasium, and auditorium.
STV Architects, Inc. designed the project. The project was constructed by Austin Helle Co., Inc. Bovis Lend Lease managed the project.
The school opened in September 2007.
