Project Description

New Roberto Clemente Elementary School and Madison Avenue K Center

K Center
An approximately 8,200-square foot existing one-story structure at Market and Madison streets in Paterson has been converted into a new kindergarten facility to house 84 students. The site design incorporates a new 10,000-square-foot area that provides a student bus stop, a parking lot and a separate play area.

The project involved two buildings on two separate lots which were near each other but not adjacent. One building has been abated and demolished and converted into a parking lot. The second building, which was once a medical facility has had its interior totally removed and has been refitted as a 4-classroom kindergarten facility. The project was completed early 2010. Student occupancy is scheduled for September 2010.

CAM Design Group Architects was the design firm for the project. Delric construction was awarded the general construction contract May 5, 2009. The construction management firm was Shapiro Associates.

New Roberto Clemente Elementary School

This new 109,042-square-foot 2-story school facility houses 602 elementary grade students. The facility is located at 19th and Market in a densely populated neighborhood within the City of Paterson and encompasses one city block.

The new facility is comprised of 31 classrooms, a gymnasium, cafetorium, and media center including separate workroom, music room, art room, computer lab, technology room, science lab, and life skills room.

Special features include a community center, community workroom, and community meeting room. Recreational areas include a basketball court, open area with interactive water features and outdoor play equipment area.

On April 6, 2005, students, teachers and community supporters joined representatives of the Paterson School District, the City of Paterson, and New Jersey Schools Construction Corporation (SCC) for a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Roberto Clemente Elementary School. The new, state-of-the-art elementary schools bears the name of one of baseball's legends, Pittsburgh Pirates standout Roberto Clemente, the late baseball star who was respected equally for his civic and charitable work in the community as well as his stellar play on the diamond.
