Here are three
examples of schools that incorporate community design
features:
José Martí Middle School
Union City, NJ
- On-site Health
Center will provide state-of-the-art medical services to students during
school hours, and to the community in the evening.
- Community Library
financed by the school district, offers community access and extended
library hours. The municipality partnered with the school district -
providing support for a librarian to manage the facility and operating
costs.
Midtown Community Elementary School
Neptune Township, NJ
- Public Safety
Center - staffed with School Resource Officers and a Drug Abuse
Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) officer, this program is funded by a
federal Community Oriented Policing Strategy (COPS) grant. The township
will assume full financial responsibility for the program when the grant
expires. During non-school hours, the school district partnered with the
Neptune Township Community Policing Unit, which will provide officers at
no additional cost to the district, allowing safe access to the general
public until 11:00 at night.
- Inter-Generational
Tutoring Center - through a partnership with the local senior center,
volunteer seniors will use this space to participate in valuable
programs with the students on a daily basis. Transportation is provided
through a partnership with the Township.
- Student Wellness
Center - on-site medical and dental care will be offered in partnership
with Meridian Health Systems -Jersey Shore Medical Center. The program
will serve students district-wide, offering immunizations and physicals,
with the district supplying transportation between neighborhood
schools.
Anastasia
Elementary School
Long Branch, NJ
- With a
state-of-the-art media center, cafetorium (cafeteria and auditorium) and
gymnasium, this school is specially designed to accommodate both school
and community events.
- A community health
center will provide medical services to students during the day and in
the evenings and on weekends for the adult community. This neighborhood
asset will offer the ideal combination of convenience
and outstanding medical care.
