SDA, Egg Harbor City Educators Break Ground for New School

Egg Harbor City, (April 4, 2009) - A groundbreaking ceremony for Egg Harbor City’s new Elementary/Middle School, was held today by New Jersey Schools Development Authority (SDA) and School District officials. They were joined by students, teachers, parents, residents, and city and community leaders.

The new 61,954-square-foot, two-story school, which will provide 21st century educational opportunities for 364 students in 4th through 8th grades, will be built on a 10-acre district-owned site on Havana Avenue. It will include 15 general classrooms, three special education rooms, science and technology labs, small-group instruction areas, art and music rooms, a library/media center, a cafetorium with a kitchen, a gymnasium and a playground. The school is scheduled to open in September 2010.

"On behalf of the SDA, I would like to say how much we are looking forward to working collaboratively to bring a new Elementary/Middle School to Egg Harbor City," said SDA CEO Kris Kolluri. “This project further enhances Governor Corzine’s commitment to bringing safe, efficient, affordable schools to New Jersey’s children. In addition, this construction project will generate jobs and stimulate economic growth.”

Superintendent John Gilly III stated, “Today is a wonderful day for the citizens of Egg Harbor City. It has been a long time coming. The new school is going to afford the children of the city the opportunity to learn necessary 21st century skills in a 21st century facility, something that has been needed for a long time. The present facility was constructed in 1923 and has served the community well, but is antiquated. It is time to move on though, and with the assistance of the New Jersey Department of Education and the Schools Development Authority, the community will now be able to fulfill the dream. For me personally, this is the biggest day in my 29-year professional career. I am so excited and appreciative to be a part of this momentous event for Egg Harbor City.”

The SDA will commit $1.3 billion toward school construction this year, which is estimated to save or create 11,000 jobs. The SDA plans to advance 27 projects into preliminary or full construction in 2009. The Elementary/Middle School is expected to save or create 200 jobs over the duration of construction.

Egg Harbor City has another project, an addition and renovations to the Charles. L. Spragg Elementary School, under way. The expanded and renovated school is scheduled to open in September 2009 with a projected 338-student enrollment. In addition, Cedar Creek High School, the Greater Egg Harbor Regional School District’s third high school, is under construction and is scheduled for a September 2010 opening.

The SDA awarded a $15,160,480 construction contract to Tamburro Brothers Construction Co., Inc., last December. The Millville-based firm was selected from among 12 firms that submitted bids.

The Vaughan Collaborative, Inc. is the design consultant for the Egg Harbor City Elementary/Middle School project. Greyhawk is SDA’s construction management firm.

The SDA will pay two-thirds of the cost for the school, with the district responsible for the remainder as its local share. The project is eligible for funding and State management because it was approved before amendments to the Educational Facilities Construction and Financing Act of 2000. Under the 2007 amendments, which established the SDA, such future projects will be managed and funded by the local districts.

Overall the SDA has completed 592 projects: 46 new schools; 41 extensive additions, renovations and/or rehabilitations; three demonstration projects and nearly 400 other projects.
