SDA, Greater Egg Harbor District Mark Groundbreaking for New High School

Egg Harbor City, NJ (October 4, 2008) - Students, parents, teachers and residents joined New Jersey Schools Development Authority and Greater Egg Harbor Regional High School District officials today for the groundbreaking of a new high school in this growing Atlantic County region.

The new Greater Egg Harbor high school will relieve crowding in the district’s two existing high schools, Oakcrest and Absegami, serving the educational needs of 1,092 students in grades 9-12.

"We at the SDA are pleased to be working with the Greater Egg Harbor Regional High School District and the community on bringing a third high school to this area," said Scott Weiner, CEO of the SDA. "This project will relieve crowding and provide educational resources to students for many years into the future."

Dr. Adam C. Pfeffer, superintendent of the Greater Egg Harbor district, said: “This project, a long-time goal of the regional district, will provide opportunities for students in a safe, secure manner. I’m especially proud that this will help the redevelopment of Egg Harbor City.”

The facility will be a two-story, 211,981-square-foot high school with auditorium and music areas along with a gymnasium, locker rooms and a cafeteria. The school will feature 24 general classrooms, six science labs, three business classrooms, two health classrooms, three special education rooms, six resource rooms, a media center/library, a family/consumer science room, two music rooms, two art rooms, a dance room, drama room, technology room and six playing fields along with an auxiliary gym.

The project is scheduled to open in September 2010.

The SDA manages the construction and two-thirds of the construction costs for the Greater Egg Harbor Regional High School District, which is a Regular Operating District, because it receives more than 55 percent of its budget from state aid. Under the August 2007 legislation establishing the SDA, such future projects will be managed by the district.

Faridy Veisz Fraytak, P.C. designed the school. Terminal Construction Corp. is the general contractor. Greyhawk is the project management firm.

Overall, the SDA has completed 44 new schools and 41 major renovations and additions, along with nearly 500 health, safety and other projects in SDA (formerly Abbott) Districts. An additional 18 are under construction. In addition, the SDA completed 19 projects in Regular Operating Districts, with seven under construction.
