SDA, Harrison Educators Celebrate Dedication of New High School

Harrison, NJ (May 10, 2008) - New Harrison High School, which provides 21st century educational opportunities for 850 students in grades 9 through 12, was formally dedicated today at a ribbon-cutting ceremony hosted by school district and New Jersey Schools Development Authority (SDA) officials.

This is the first school built in Harrison under SDA funding and management and the first new school to open in the district in 46 years. The school opened last September.

Following the ceremony, which was attended by students, parents, teachers and residents, public tours of the new high school were conducted. The facility includes a new multi-sport athletic complex on the 10-acre campus located at Kingsland Avenue and Cross Street in the northwest section of the community.

The 167,000-square-foot new Harrison High School includes 30 general classrooms, four special education classrooms, two small-group instruction rooms, a media center/library, science labs, a computer room, a cafeteria, an auditorium, two gyms, a dance/aerobics studio, instrumental/vocal music room and faculty spaces. The athletic complex, completed in September 2006, includes a track, baseball fields, a soccer/football field, tennis courts and a 350-seat bleacher building funded by the Harrison Board of Education.

Scott Weiner, CEO of the SDA, said, “On behalf of everyone at the SDA, I would like to say we are pleased to have been involved in the construction of this new high school. Our collaboration with the school district and community should be a great source of pride for all concerned. The concerted effort has provided a safe, modern facility that will enhance academic achievement for present and future generations of students.”

Superintendent Anthony Comprelli stated, "This new Harrison High School represents a significant investment in the children of Harrison – an investment by both the State of New Jersey and the Town of Harrison to ensure that future generations will have a first-class academic and athletic facility. On behalf of the Board of Education I'd like to thank the Schools Development Authority and Harrison's Mayor and Council for providing this school building and sports complex. Personally I'd like to thank the Board of Education for its support and the administration and staff of Harrison High School for the tremendous cooperation put forth in achieving this goal."

Comprelli noted that the last new school to be built in Harrison was the former Harrison High School, which was dedicated in 1962. It is currently serving as Washington Middle School for students in 6th through 8th grades.

EI Associates, Architects & Engineers, PA, designed the new high school, which was built by Terminal Construction Corporation. The project was managed for the SDA by Bovis Lend Lease in a joint effort with Imperial Construction Company.

Overall, the Authority has completed 41 schools, 37 major renovations and additions, and nearly 400 health, safety and other projects in SDA Districts (formerly classified as Abbott Districts). The Authority has 26 active projects in SDA Districts.
