Actress Cicely Tyson Speaks at Ceremony For East Orange Demonstration Project
Students sign steel beam to be placed atop Performing Arts School named in her honor

East Orange, NJ (September 27, 2007) – Cicely Tyson, the Emmy Award-winning and Academy Award-nominated actress, was among the guest speakers at a beam-signing ceremony marking a milestone in the construction of the new Cicely Tyson School of Fine and Performing Arts. The community magnet school will accommodate 1,300 students from pre-k through 12th grade. One of six state demonstration projects, the school will be a cornerstone of revitalization efforts in the Main Street area of the Essex County city.

Other speakers included East Orange Mayor Robert L. Bowser, School Superintendent Dr. Clarence C. Hoover and Jerry Murphy, Chief Operating Officer of the New Jersey Schools Development Authority (SDA), which is providing the funding for the community school. The East Orange demonstration project is being co-developed by the city and school district of East Orange, Triad Associates and Joseph Jingoli & Son, Inc.

During the ceremony, students, residents and assembled officials signed a structural steel beam that was then hoisted into place at the top of the 309,000-square-foot school off Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard. The facility combines Cicely Tyson School of Fine and Performing Arts and Washington Academy of Music. It is being built on the site of the old East Orange High School, which was razed to create an 11-acre campus.
