SCC Breaks Ground for Early Childhood Center in Garfield

State Funds $8.9 Million Early Childhood Center in Bergen County

Garfield, NJ (September 23, 2003) - The NJ Schools Construction Corporation (SCC) begins construction on an early childhood center in Garfield today, the only Abbott District in Bergen County.

The State is funding the $8.9 million facility that will benefit over 300 pre-kindergarten students. This is the SCC's first groundbreaking in the City of Garfield, and the SCC and the Garfield Board of Education will mark this milestone at a ceremony attended by local and state educators and public officials.

The funding is part of an $8.6 billion school construction program that will help to revitalize the community, bringing jobs and targeted growth to the area.

"This has been a long journey and we are very excited about the school and its anticipated opening in September 2004," said Nicholas Perrapato superintendent of schools. The project involves new construction of a 45,000 square-foot two-story facility that includes a nurse's area and 24 classrooms.

"This project is another example of the progress SCC has made in the implementation of the state's historic school construction initiative. This is one of many that will be built under the educational facilities law," said Alfred McNeill CEO New Jersey Schools Construction Corporation (SCC).

Under the Educational Facilities Construction and Financing Act, SCC is responsible for school projects throughout the State. The program is the largest public construction program ever undertaken by the State of New Jersey and represents one of the largest programs of its type ever undertaken in the nation.
